It is a negligence of the mind not to notice how at dusk Heron comes to the pond and stands there in his death robes, perfect servant of the system, hungry, his eyes full of attention, his wings pure light.
Mary Oliver
A photographic series….
This beautiful creature allowed me to sit very close and still while it ‘fished’ I witnessed the catch, the positioning as it prepared to eat and most disturbing to me the final look of the fish as it peeked over it’s bill and prepared to enter the gullet of the Heron.
The cruelty and beauty of nature on a late summer evening.
Patience. Success. Dinner. Positioning One Last Look
A story or poem follows me around for a while, I write it down to get it out of my head and sometimes after rereading it seems universal enough that I hope it might also speak to someone else.
One thing that has become clear is the photography and the writing seem to be morphing into one, the photograph being the muse for the words or the words for the photograph.....and then a quote I find from someone who had the talent to put what I am trying to say into a few precise sentences.

Thanks to the Heron who allowed me to come close enough and stay long enough to capture the images. I didn’t notice the fish having its last look until I dowloaded the shots….
One of my favorite neighbors is Blue Heron. We have been spending a bit of quiet time together the last few days, always a treat. One spring they had all come up north only to find the ice wasn’t out in most of the lakes and ponds so I saw dozens congregated in one nearby lake that had some open water. That was a remarkable convention. No pictures of course…
Beautiful Images dear West Coast woman 🙂 feels like you patiently waited observing the heron, who was patiently waiting telling us a lesson we need to learn, practise daily.
Wonderful.

Thank you Mike. I know I have often noticed you mention Herons in your poems. There is something so mystical about them.

Majestic. Mystical. Magic. The way they just skirt the water, seeming to defy gravity.
